Natural history lesson is one of the best landmarks

The oldest community in the Verde Valley, Camp Verde was founded in 1865 to protect settlers from Indian raids. Area attractions range from pioneer burial grounds to the original homes of military officers. A definite show for those with a curiosity about the historical events of military as well as native peoples who lived with the land befor becoming occupied by settlers from all around.

Montezuma Castle National Monument is five miles north of Camp Verde. The main unit contains some of the best-preserved cliff dwellings in the United States. The Montezuma Well unit, 11 miles northeast, features a large natural limestone sink, whose waters were used for a network of prehistoric irrigation canals. The castle is also headquarters for nearby Tuzigoot National Monument.

• Fort Verde State Park, providing historical artifacts such as military equipment and Native artifacts. There are also four original buildings still standing from the days when Fort Verde was inhabited.

• General Crook Trail, a wonderful scenic drive that can bring beauty to the eyes of those less inclined to exercise, and a step to the past as well with the viewing of historic mile markers on nearby trees and rocks.

• Fort Verde Days is celebrated the second weekend in October.

• Cliff Castle Casino offers something for everyone. Every age can enjoy this fun-filled adventure. From a ‘50s style diner to cosmic bowling to concerts, this provides entertainment for adults while children play video games in the nearby arcade.

Schools

The Camp Verde School District has a public elementary school, a public middle school, a public high school, a private elementary school and a private high school. There is also a Head Start program by the elementary school. Yavapai College also offers a variety of classes in Camp Verde.
